“I can’t get to the gym today.”
Since opening Coastal Performance in 2010, I’ve been on the other end of this message hundreds (if not thousands ) of times. The inevitable work meeting, sick kid, or unexpected annoyance leads to a missed workout and another opportunity lost. The reality is, even our best clients only average about 3.6 hours per week inside our facility. That leaves almost 165 hours outside of our influence. The worst part? Those hours determine much more about your success or failure than any training protocol I can dream up.
Don’t get me wrong, exercises and instruction are MASSIVELY important for strength and performance gains, as well as reducing risk of injury and improving function. But let’s be honest; we all want to look good too. And looking good is a direct result of reinforcing good habits through accountability during the other 165 hours a week. So what goes wrong during that time that keeps us from being where we want? It’s not as if we don’t know what to eat or how much we should exercise. A quick Google search produces more information than I could process in a thousand lifetimes.
So if it’s not a lack of information, maybe a lack of motivation? There’s nothing wrong with motivation; it’s a wave you should ride every time it pops up. However it is, as with anything rooted in emotion, fleeting and unreliable. But what about those people who seem effortlessly motivated everyday, grinding through workouts and dieting with ease. Let’s examine these “motivated people.” Having a routine that gets you to consistently do something isn’t really motivation, even if it looks that way (were that the case you’d have to pump yourself up just to brush your teeth everyday).
It took me years as a professional coach and fitness expert to reach these conclusions. They’ve transformed our process with our clients, and transformed their results. The old familiar phrases like “I need a gym to workout,” or “I need you to train me or I won’t do it,” have given way to a deeper coaching relationship, better results, and long-lasting change.
